RESUMO

Background: Music training involves several cognitive functions in the brain, particularly executive function. Numerous studies have proven a link between the two. Cognitive flexibility is an important component of executive function, however, there has been little study investigating the association between music training and cognitive flexibility. Method: Music training (N = 22) and the control groups (N = 26) were included in the present study. A tone-related oddball task was used to investigate the tone-related inhibition and the switch task was to investigate cognitive flexibility. During the switch task, EEG data were collected. Results: The behavioral results of the oddball task showed that the individuals in the music training group had a shorter reaction time and higher accuracy in both the between-tone and within-tone categories compared to the controls. The behavioral results of the switch task showed similar results, with the music training group exhibiting better reaction time and accuracy performance than the controls. ERP results showed that the music training group had smaller P3 amplitudes and greater N2 and N450 amplitudes than the control group. Discussion: The findings further supported the link between music training and enhanced cognitive function.

RESUMO

Music training involves manifolds of sensorimotor processes that tie closely with executive functions, including conflict control. Past studies have found consistent evidence in children of the link between music learning and executive functions. However, the same relationship has not been found in adult populations, and conflict control has yet to be studied in a focused manner. Via the Stroop task and event-related potentials (ERPs), the present study examined the association between musical training and conflict control ability among Chinese college students. The findings exhibited that individuals with music training outperformed individuals without music training by demonstrating higher accuracy and faster reaction times on the Stroop task and exhibiting greater N2 and smaller P3 amplitudes compared to the control group. The results support our hypothesis that people who received music training demonstrate advantages in their capacity for conflict control. The findings also provide scope for future research.

RESUMO

COVID-19 has globally spread to burden the medical system. Even with a massive vaccination, a mucosal vaccine offering more comprehensive and convenient protection is imminent. Here, a micro-sized vaccine based on recombinant Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (rLP) displaying spike or receptor-binding domain (RBD) was characterized as microparticles, and its safety and protective effects against SARS-CoV-2 were evaluated. We found a 66.7% mortality reduction and 100% protection with rLP against SARS-CoV-2 in a mouse model. The histological analysis showed decreased hemorrhage symptoms and increased leukocyte infiltration in the lung. Especially, rLP:RBD significantly decreased pulmonary viral loads. For the first time, our study provides a Lactiplantibacillus plantarum-vectored vaccine to prevent COVID-19 progress and transmission via intranasal vaccination.

RESUMO

Nipah virus (NiV) is a newly emerged extremely dangerous zoonotic pathogen highly fatal to humans. Currently, no approved vaccine is available against NiV. This study employed a mammalian eukaryotic system to express NiV soluble G glycoprotein (NiV-sG), using CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG)/Aluminum salt (Alum) as adjuvants to obtain a recombinant subunit vaccine candidate. We also evaluated the immunogenicity and efficacy of the protein in mice and pigs. The results showed that humoral and cellular immune responses were induced in all the vaccination groups in two animal models. The levels of specific and neutralizing antibodies and the proliferation levels of T helper(Th) cells were significantly higher than those in the control group. The protective efficacy of the subunit vaccines evaluated in the pseudovirus in vivo infection mouse model strongly suggested that this vaccine could provide protective immunity against NiV. A neoadjuvant (HTa) based on liposomes and cholera toxin combined with CpG/Alum was exploited and evaluated in mice. The neoadjuvant group showed a more protective efficacy than the CpG/Alum group. The aforementioned results indicated that the subunit vaccine could be used as a promising candidate vaccine for preventing Nipah virus infection.

RESUMO

Adding redox additives to conventional electrolytes is considered to be an effective method to improve electrochemical performance of the supercapacitors, which is ascribed to the additional Farady capacitance derived from the reversible redox reaction. Here, the influence of K3 Fe(CN)6 on electrochemical properties for single electrode system and the assembled solid-state supercapacitor are investigated. The carbon felt (CF) electrode in the mixed solution of K3 Fe(CN)6 /KCl exhibits remarkable specific capacitance of 2.45 F cm-2 after 5000 cycles, obviously much higher than conventional electrolyte KCl. The capacitance retention and the coulombic efficiency of the solid-state supercapacitor maintains 86.5% and 97% after 2500 cycles, symmetric supercapacitor shows a high energy density of 58 mWh L-1 at power density of 660 mW L-1 . Furthermore, the solid-state SCs exhibit excellent flexibility and four supercapacitors are capable of lighting up an LED lamp, demonstrating the potential of practical applications of the as-prepared solid-state SCs.

RESUMO

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by a novel betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has been an ongoing global pandemic. Several vaccines have been developed to control the COVID-19, but the potential effectiveness of the mucosal vaccine remains to be documented. In this study, we constructed a recombinant L. plantarum LP18:RBD expressing the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein via the surface anchoring route. The amount of the RBD protein was maximally expressed under the culture condition with 200 ng/mL of inducer at 33 °C for 6 h. Further, we evaluated the immune response in mice via the intranasal administration of LP18:RBD. The results showed that the LP18:RBD significantly elicited RBD-specific mucosal IgA antibodies in respiratory tract and intestinal tract. The percentages of CD3 + CD4+ T cells in spleens of mice administrated with the LP18:RBD were also significantly increased. This indicated that LP18:RBD could induce a humoral immune response at the mucosa, and it could be used as a mucosal vaccine candidate against the SARS-CoV-2 infection. We provided the first experimental evidence that the recombinant L. plantarum LP18:RBD could initiate immune response in vivo, which implies that the mucosal immunization using recombinant LAB system could be a promising vaccination strategy to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

p-Aminoazobenzene (pAAB) is a hazardous azo dye that causes considerable harm to human health and the environment. The development of novel and sensitive sensors for the rapid detection of pAAB is in high demand. In this study, a simple fluorescent sensor for pAAB detection is designed based on carbon dots (CDs) which are prepared using green carbon source of Momordica charantia L. via a facile hydrothermal approach. The fluorescence spectra of CDs exhibit considerable overlap with the absorption band of pAAB, and the fluorescence is specifically suppressed in the presence of pAAB ascribed to the inner filter effect. Good and wide linearity is observed in the pAAB concentration range of 0.01-12.5 µg mL-1 with a lower detection limit of 3.9 ng mL-1. The established method achieves good results with a rapid analysis of pAAB in different practical water and soil samples. The as-constructed fluorescent sensor provides a simple, rapid, economical and eco-friendly platform and possesses prospective applications for the effective, selective and sensitive detection of pAAB in the environmental field.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become a global pandemic in the past four months and causes respiratory disease in humans of almost all ages. Although several drugs have been announced to be partially effective treatments for this disease, no approved vaccine is available. Here, we described the construction of a recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum strain expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The results showed that the spike gene with optimized codons could be efficiently expressed on the surface of recombinant L. plantarum and exhibited high antigenicity. The highest protein yield was obtained under the following conditions: cells were induced with 50 ng/mL SppIP at 37 °C for 6-10 h. The recombinant spike (S) protein was stable under normal conditions and at 50 °C, pH = 1.5, or a high salt concentration. Recombinant L. plantarum may provide a promising food-grade oral vaccine candidate against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

RESUMO

Contraceptive use in the United States is virtually universal among women of reproductive age. However, unplanned pregnancies continue to occur and can be largely attributed to the nonuse and misuse of contraception. Reducing unintended pregnancies constitutes a critical goal for managed care and the public. This can be achieved in part with intrauterine devices (IUDs), which are an effective method of contraception that require a one-time insertion and stay in place for 5-10 years. Therefore, compliance issues are largely mitigated, and actual use efficacy is the same as perfect use efficacy. The IUD is also reversible, unlike tubal ligation, and could potentially be the contraceptive of choice in today's environment. Unfortunately, safety concerns surrounding the use of older IUDs have precluded many women from recognizing the benefits of their use. Currently, the only approved IUDs in the United States are ParaGard, the copper IUD, and Mirena, the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS). These devices offer superior safety profiles compared with those products that were withdrawn from the market in the 1970s. In addition to a favorable safety and tolerability profile, the LNG-IUS offers an advantage over copper IUDs, demonstrating improved efficacy in preventing intrauterine and ectopic pregnancies. Successful communication between patients and providers regarding the improved safety and efficacy of newer IUDs will ensure an appropriate place in therapy. Thus, greater numbers of women will recognize the IUD as a safe, cost-effective means to contraception, thereby reducing the economic and social burdens associated with unplanned pregnancies.
